Guide and worksheet for comparing Disney’s Cinderella and Dasent’s “Katie

Woodencloak”

1) At the beginning of both Cinderella and “Katie,” the main character’s father is

absent—for a different reason in each case. What are the reasons? And why is this

element of the plot important?

2) Compare Katie’s primary helper/donor with Cinderella’s. How are they alike? How

are they different?

3) What is the role of the mice in Cinderella? Why are they given a larger role in the

film?

4) Olrik’s “law of three” is clearly in evidence in “Katie” but absent in Cinderella.

Document the law in “Katie” and explain why it is absent from the film.

5) What is the role of the prince in each of the stories? How is his role tied to a possible

function of this tale?

6) Compare Katie and Cinderella as “characters” or role models. Account for the

differences.

7) Compare the expected audiences and assumed cultural frame of reference at work in

these two versions of AT510. Account for these differences.
